Candle festival of UbonRatchathani 2018
Candle festival is a Buddhist tradition of UbonRatchathani that is held for long time ago. It’s the biggest religious festival of the province which is held every year in the 15th day of the 8th waxing moon and the 1st day of the 8th waning moon called “KhaoPhansa”. The date of this year is on Friday 27th July2018 and Saturday 28th July 2018.
Candle festival of UbonRatchathani 2018 is scheduled between 23-28 July 2561 with many activities.
Visiting Candle CraftsmenCommunity
Starts by visiting candle festival, for those who have much time, we suggest you to come at the beginning of July. You will see and participate in candle making with many craftsmen around local temples. The temples that haveenormous candle are Chai Mongkoltemple, Buraparamtemple, Thung Srimuang temple, Sri Pradu temple, PhaSukaram temple, Jaeng temple, PhonPhaentemple, Sri UbonRattanaram temple, and liab temple. For other districts, we suggest DetUdom district at MuangDet temple and Boondarik district.
Moreover, there are more interesting temples that make candle such as MahaWanaram temple, Phra That NongBua temple, SuthatSanaram temple, and Darasilp store at WatKlang community or Khemarat district. The visitors may participate in making wax flowers for craftsmen to attach to the candle. However, carving candle requires high carving skills, so the visitors may only observe. According to Ubon guide, the recommended time to visit is at the evening to night because the temperature is not high, so the craftsmen will be more concentrated on their works. There are children guide explaining about candle making in some temples such as Phra That NongBua temple and PhaSukaram temple.
His Majesty’s Grant Candle
Candle festival board respectfully informs to beg for his Majesty’s grant candle from King Rama IV in Buddhist lent tradition. It is royal grace of his Majesty the king to endorse granted lent candle for UbonRatchathani province. The board will have an audience with royalty to receive grant lent candle at Dusit Palace seven days before the first day of the candle festival with fitting receive ceremony. It is enshrined as an auspicious candle in the ceremony. It is also the only candle that is given to the country and the candle procession continuing since the year 1979.
23 July 2018 the beginning of candle festival
Candle festival of UbonRatchathani 2018 officially begins on 23 July 2018. The procession is not on this day, this day is a prelude of candle making. The opening of the festival will be in front of the city pillar shrine at 18.30 P.M. After that you canjoin activities of the candle street. There are candle molding, folk shows, and exhibitions. There is extra activity in the festival that is candle cave which is held around Moon river behind Luang temple to Municipality 3 market (TaladYai). The opening time is 19.30 P.M.
There are many activities between 23-28 July 2561 as followed:
- “Hong Heet Sri Wanalai” performace (beautiful scenery) and UbonRatchathani OTOP sales at the old city hall.
- Candle street connected to the old city between Ratchabut street to Moon river.
- Lent merit making activity “Candle castle” at Jaturamuk hall,Thung Sri Muang.
On 26 July 2018, you are invited to see beauty contest and join Northeastern style dining (Palaeng) at Tubtim Siam room, Sunee Grand and Convention Hotel. If you are interested to participate in the beauty contest or buying dining ticket, contact UbonRatchathanimunicipality.
Candle Gathering Day
27 July 2018 from 15.00, every candle will be gathered at Thung Sri Muang around AnubanUbonRatchathani school. It’s the not-to-be-missed highlight of this festival. Ubon guides suggest that we should come at the evening to see many magnificent carve candle. For those who can stay the night, you can come around 20 P.M. and 21 P.M. because the candle will be there all night for the day procession on 28 July 2018.
Candle Night Procession
On 27-28 July 2018 between 19.00 - 20.30 P.M. you are invited to see candle night procession in the topic of “Gerd Tae Ubon” in front of Sri UbonRattanaram temple. Both days’ performance are the same, but on 28 July 2018 at 18.00 P.M. before the performance, there will be candle awards.
The opening and releasing candle procession
On 28 July 2018 from 08.30 P.M. in front of Sri UbonRattanaram temple, there will be an official opening of candle festival UbonRatchathani 2018. After the opening, you are invited to see candle procession and Thai dance. Ubon guides suggest you to have your seat early before 7 A.M. because the seat is limited and full very quick. If you miss the seat, you may have to stand for hours.
Sightseeing Ubon Candle Throughout July
After candle procession, every awarded candle will be shown at UbonRatchathani college dome throughout July.
